Leaders and Scholars

Students in a line.

Doctor, lawyer, teacher, artist, scientist: Wherever they might land after graduation, IU Bloomington students now have a new “get-ready” option to help them assume leadership roles in their professions.

Skill-building workshops, hands-on management experience, academic credit for learning about leadership, and oversight of more than $100,000 in scholarships and grants: All are part of the new Leaders and Scholars program of the IU Student Foundation. The goal? Nothing less than to prepare some of IU’s best and brightest students for lives of service—service that will benefit their communities, our institutions, and the world.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”

John Quincy Adams

Two alumni of the IUSF Steering Committee, Sally and Steve Springer, stepped forward to provide program funding for Leaders and Scholars. The IUSF experience shaped both of their lives as undergrads in the 1960s. Now they want to ensure that current students have the same transformative experience.

“When you learn leadership and practice it at the Student Foundation, you lay the cornerstone for a life of service,” explains Sally. Steve, an IUF board member, adds, “We hope Leaders and Scholars will guarantee that students leave school with a deep love of IU and a true sense of what it means to lead and inspire others.”

Call that an investment today with guaranteed returns for the future.
