One of the courses I most enjoy teaching is an introduction to philosophy called “Belief, Rationality, and Commitment.” It focuses on how and why we believe what we do.

The students, with the help of philosophers ranging from Plato to Camus, explore the connection between intellectual and practical commitment, between understanding and action. The course stimulates introspection, but it also makes plain that beliefs and ideals are made real in action and commitment.

Indiana University’s supporters share this view. They believe in the mission and values of the university, and they demonstrate their commitment in many ways. They contribute to scholarship funds because they believe that students should have opportunities. They support faculty research because they understand that such work is important. They know that a world-class university should graduate citizens of the world, so they give to student programs across the academic spectrum.

IU benefits from these actions inspired by belief, vision, and generosity. Each separate act makes a difference. Together, they have tremendous impact throughout the university.

You are one of the active, committed believers. Thank you for embracing Indiana University.
