Little 500
60 Years of
Spreading the Word
The Indiana University Student Foundation
“We have no identity on campus, neither with the students nor the faculty.” So concluded Howdy Wilcox after only a year as the Indiana University Foundation’s executive director. Wilcox quickly took steps to change that reality. In 1950, he recommended to IU President Herman B Wells the formation of a Student Foundation committee charged with one task: spreading the word.

For nearly 60 years now, the IU Student Foundation has done just that. For thousands of students each year, it provides opportunities for leadership and participation through events like IU Sing, the Style Show, the Mini 500, and most recently the Little Fifty running race. And, of course, each spring features the Little 500, the centerpiece of what’s become known as “The World’s Greatest College Weekend.”
Along the way, more than $1.5 million has been raised for student scholarships at IU Bloomington. Obviously, the word has been spread.

Ride Fast, Turn Left: Little 500

IUSF's premiere annual event, the Little 500 is the world's largest intramural bike race. It attracts over 25,000 spectators, inspired an Oscar-winning movie, and was featured in The 100 Sporting Events You Must See Live. Over its 59-year history, the Little 500 has raised more than $1.5 million for scholarships. (Photo at top.)
